The HBL PSL will again be featuring the top talent of Pakistan Cricket as new local players’ categories have been finalized for the upcoming season.
The new T20I captain of Pakistan Cricket Team, Babar Azam, leads his way into the Platinum category while his teammates Imad Wasim, Shadab Khan, Hasan Ali – the leading wicket taker of HBL PSL 4 – and Shaheen Shah Afridi have also made the cut to the tier for upcoming HBL PSL 2020 as well.
With categories renewed now, the process of recruitment for PSL 5 has also started. During the renewal process for player categories, a representative from all the franchises voted for the player categories. The representatives weren’t allowed, however, to vote for the players of their own teams. All the teams were also given the right for submitting review requests after the process completion.
The Head of Player Acquisition & Management Imran Ahmad Khan and the National Selection Coordinator Nadeem Khan also reviewed the finalized list after the voting process.
The PCB Chief Executive Wasim Khan said, “With the completion of the category renewal process for the upcoming season of the HBL Pakistan Super League we have reached an important milestone. These are exciting times as we move closer and closer towards the 2020 season which will be a truly historic one as all 34 matches will be played in Pakistan.
“HBL PSL has become one of the most sought after T20 leagues in the world, the next edition will be even bigger and better, I am sure fans both in Pakistan and around the world will enjoy top-class cricket, with world-class facilities at the stadiums and top-quality broadcast once the tournament begins in February 2020,” he said.
During the 2-step process for renewal of player categories, different aspects were taken into consideration like PSL performances, domestic performances, national team performances and the perceived brand value for T20s.
All the players who have performed for Pakistan national side were assigned Gold as their base category. According to the draft rules this year, all the teams will be able to retain a maximum of 8 players from their PSL 2019 roster.
Any U-23 players who have also been called up for Pakistan before this process of category finalization can’t appear in the Emerging Category during the PSL 2020 draft. Furthermore, any U-23 players cannot feature in the Emerging category for more than 2 years unless they’ve played only 3 games or less in those years.
The PSL franchises will also have the right of floating relegation requests for their players before retentions are finalized. After floating a relegation request, all the other teams will have the chance for meeting the base category of the player. If none of the teams matches the base category for the player, he will be relegated down to a category below their base category.
Such relegation requests may be floated only after taking player’s consent. The PCB will separately release the list of local players who did not participate in the HBL PSL 4.
