Multan Cricket Stadium

Cricket has been more of a religion to Pakistanis than a sport. That’s nothing wrong to say considering the way Pakistanis follow the game. In recent years, the introduction of Pakistan Super League has taken that hype to all new levels and has allowed Pakistan to stand proudly amidst cricketing nations that run their own T20 cricket leagues. However, since its inaugural season in 2016, the PSL will be played completely at home in the upcoming PSL 2020 season. With that announcement, there’s a new hype created around PSL 2020 venues and everyone is interested in exploring the cricket grounds that will host the prestigious tournament in Pakistan. The popular Multan Cricket Stadium is one of the 4 venues that have been chosen for this purpose and here we have a few details about the venue.

Multan Cricket Stadium PSL 2020

Inaugurated in 2001, Multan Cricket Stadium was built as a multipurpose cricket stadium to replace the old Qasim Bagh Stadium to host cricket games in the ‘City of Saints’. Pakistan Cricket Board owns the stadium that boasts of one of the greenest outfields to have ever built in the country.

Located just off the Vehari Road, in the city’s suburbs, the Multan Cricket Stadium holds a capacity of around 35000 spectators which is one of the highest in the country as well.

The very first game played at this venue was way back in 2001 when Pakistan hosted Bangladesh in a test match played as part of the Asian Test Championship. The stadium has hosted only ODI and Test cricket as far as international games are concerned but it has been a venue for many domestic T20 games and will now be hosting matches of PSL 5 as well.

After its inauguration in 2001, the stadium was installed with floodlights later to make it a suitable to host day/night matches. It hosted its first day/night game in Feb, 2016 between arch-rivals India and Pakistan.

The Multan Cricket Stadium was part of a renovation drive launched by PCB in April 2018 alongside several other venues in the bid to prepare them to host international cricket in future and also the fixtures in upcoming PSL 2020.

Has Multan Hosted PSL Games Before?

No, it’s going to be the first time that Multan will be hosting the matches of Pakistan Super League. However, the venue has received the least number of games among all four venues decided for PSL 5. Nevertheless, there will be cricket played at the venue and international players will land in Multan after a long gap.
