The biggest city in Pakistan, Karachi is home to one of the finest cricket stadiums in the country. The National Stadium Karachi is a prime cricketing venue that has hosted a number of historic cricket games and has also hosted the matches of Pakistan Super League as well for last two seasons, including the big Finals. The venue has been chosen once again as a primary choice for PSL 2020 as well and is set to host a total of 9 games in the history-making tournament that will be hosted completely in Pakistan.
National Stadium Karachi PSL 2020
The National Stadium Karachi belongs to the PCB and it also serves as the Karachi Kings home ground in PSL as well. The stadium is the second biggest in terms of capacity in Pakistan after Multan Cricket Stadium and can accommodate 34228 spectators at a time.
Over the years, it has been one of the favorite venues for the Pakistan national side who have lost just 2 out of 40 Tests played here. It has also been a venue for some exciting matches full of wonderful cricketing moments for the fans. Some memorable moments include 181 runs innings by Viv Richards against Sri Lanka during 1987 World Cup, Kamran Akmal’s popular century that he scored against India in 2006 on a tough wicket after his team’s collapse of 39-6, and Mohammad Yousuf’s landmark ninth century with which he went passed Viv Richards’ most runs record during a calendar year.
If you look into the history, the National Stadium Karachi was city’s 5th and country’s 11th first-class venue. It was inaugurated in 1955 with the match between India and Pakistan and has since become more of a fortress for Pakistan cricket team.
The stadium got the chance to host its first ever ODI against West Indies, after a couple of decades of its establishment, in 1980. Even that was an exciting game of cricket which was decided on the last ball. In limited-overs cricket, the Pakistanis haven’t been as lucky at this venue as they were in the longer format.
The legends Waqar Younis and Sachin Tendulkar also played their first ever Test Match at the National Stadium Karachi.
The stadium underwent some serious renovations ahead of the Pakistan Super League matches that were scheduled here last year. In 2019, it hosted the entire Pakistan leg of the tournament.
Has Karachi Hosted PSL Games Before?
Yes, Karachi was the second venue in Pakistan, after Gaddafi Stadium Lahore, to host the PSL games. In the gradual process of bringing PSL back home, Karachi was privileged to host the big Final of the PSL 2018 where Islamabad United defeated Peshawar Zalmi by 3 wickets to claim their second title win.
In PSL 2019, the National Stadium Karachi emerged as the favorite choice to host the entire Pakistan leg of the tournament after the fixtures were moved from Lahore to Karachi as a result of some unforeseeable circumstances. The stadium hosted the qualifier, both the eliminators, and the big Final of the tournament besides 4 league stage games. In the Final, Quetta Gladiators claimed their first title win by defeating Peshawar Zalmi by 8 wickets.
The National Stadium Karachi will host 9 games of the PSL 2020 as well with the event scheduled completely in Pakistan for the upcoming season. And, it is set to host the first game of PSL 2020 on 20th February, 2020 as well.
