Pakistan Super League is the biggest cricketing event in the Pakistan’s domestic circuit without a doubt and its ready to mark its 5th season since it first started in 2016. There’s a lot of hype around this tournament every year and PSL 5 will be no different. Things start every year with the PSL auction and all eyes will be on PSL 2020 Draft too as we draw closer and closer to the time.
PSL 5 All Teams Squad
The PSL 5 Draft 2020 is scheduled in November and soon the teams will be notified about issuing their retained players lists and the trade window will be opened.
What makes PSL draft 2020 even more special is the fact that the tournament will be held entirely in Pakistan this time around. So, we’ll only see the foreign players in the draft who would be ready to come to the country and participate in the entire tournament. We don’t know yet as to how the international players who are with different franchises since the first season would react to this development. But most probably we are going to see all the frontline players participating in the Pakistan Super League 2020 for sure.
2020 PSL 5 Draft Date And Time
Every year, the PSL draft is held in November and we expect the same this time around as well. As for the exact PSL 5 Draft Date and time, the PCB has kept the cards close to its chest yet. The exact PSL 2020 Draft Date and time hasn’t been officially disclosed until now and we have all sorts of guesswork going on.
Last time around, the PSL 2020 draft was held on 20th of November and started at 3pm. So, you can expect the same date and time for the PSL draft schedule for PSL 5 as well. Even if there is some deviation, there won’t be much difference and the draft will be held somewhere in the mid November for sure. But who will be the PSL 5 highest paid players? Let’s do a bit of digging into it.
PSL 2020 Auction Venue
Last year’s PSL draft was staged in Islamabad with the replacement draft taking place later in January at the famous Gaddafi Stadium Lahore.
As far as the PSL 2020 auction venue is concerned, we don’t know yet as to where the event will be hosted. Most probably, it will be the Pakistan Cricket’s headquarter Gadaffi Stadium Lahore once again. But still, there is nothing official yet and we might have a change in PSL 2020 draft venue as we get closer to the draft date and things get cleared by the PCB officials.
Until we have the final word, just sit back and wait for the time and we’ll keep you posted as soon as something is announced by PCB officially.
PSL 2020 Retained Players List
Before the PSL draft every year, the franchises are allowed to keep some players, trade some, and release the rest into the pool of players that will be available on the day of the draft for other teams. This is the practice we have seen since the second season of the tournament and it will follow the same pattern moving forward as well.
Even though we don’t have the final list of retained players PSL 5, here we have listed the players that each franchise will most likely be retaining for the next season. Let’s have a look.
Lahore Qalandars Retained Players List PSL 5
Let’s start with Lahore Qalandars – the side that has disappointed the most over the years. The first player they will be retaining is Fakhar Zaman. The left handed opening batsman also captained the side in last year’s PSL.
Besides, they will have Mohammad Hafeez who has also been the captain of the side in previous PSL editions. The right-handed batsman plays both as an opener and in the middle order. He’s classy and stylish to look at.
Next, on the list is Shaheen Shah Afridi, the guy who was unplayable in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 in the latter part of the tournament. He definitely deserves to be retained.
The right arm quick Haris Rauf who came out from Lahore’s talent hunt program in last year’s PSL and left everyone stunned will be another retained player for Lahore. He bowls really quick and is a wicket-taker.
Lahore have already announced that they’d be retaining Salman But for the upcoming season PSL 5. So, his inclusion in Lahore’s Squad is certain.
Karachi Kings Retained Players List PSL 2020
Karachi is another PSL franchise that has underperformed in all the seasons played so far. However, there performance saw an upward spike in the PSL 2019 and they’d be expected to move ahead from there.
As for their retained players list for PSL 5, the run-machine Babar Azam would be their top pick. He has been performing at his best lately and would be the key player for the side in the upcoming PSL. Scoring at an average of 50+ during last one year, he’s really classy to look at. Hopefully, he’ll make a difference in the upcoming season of the tournament.
Pacer Mohammad Amir has been with Karachi Kings since the inaugural edition of the tournament and he’ll likely stay with them in PSL 2020 as well.
Last year, Mohammad Rizwan was traded to Karachi against Sohail Khan and he is expected to stay with them in the upcoming PSL T20 as well. Even though there have been one-off performances to his credit, he is still a player worth retaining.
The captain Imad Wasim will also be retained by Karachi Kings. The team performed quite well under his captaincy and his presence is surely going to make a difference for them in the upcoming season. Besides, he showed a lot of improvement with the bat lately as well and can hit the ball hard lower down the order.
Finally, Karachi will be retaining Colin Munro, the hard hitter from New Zealand. He provides stability and some firepower lower down the order and can be a key pick for the upcoming season.
Multan Sultans Retained Players List 2020 PSL
Multan Sultans have had a dramatic start to their run with Pakistan Super League with the team being given to a different owner and management just after one season. Their performance has been below par as well in both the seasons played so far despite having some of the biggest names.
First up, they will be retaining the captain Shoaib Malik for the upcoming season. Even though he hasn’t been at his sheer best in recent times, his experience and class is what Sultans will need in the PSL 2020.
The next retention will be the legend Shahid Afridi. In one of his recent statements, the former Pakistan captain said that he’d be available for Sultans for the next PSL if the management decides to carry him forward. And, most likely, he will be there in the final squad of Multan Sultans.
The left-arm pacer Junaid Khan who was in the news for some of his posts on social media after being dropped from the World Cup squad is also going to stay with Sultans. His performances have been good lately and he is definitely worth retaining.
The tall and lanky Muhammad Irfan will be retained as well. He started off with Islamabad United first but later was included in the Sultans once the franchise was introduced in the PSL. He’s likely to stay with Multan as well as he offers an undue advantage to his side over other franchises.
Finally, Multan will expectedly retain the in-form Steve Smith. He was part of their squad in PSL 4 but was ruled out of the tournament due to his elbow injury. However, Multan would like to take full advantage of his presence in this season. And, he is likely to have no issues with playing the entire season in Pakistan too. So, we are up for some class for sure.
Peshawar Zalmi Retained Players List 2020 PSL 5
Peshawar Zalmi is by far one of the best sides in the Pakistan Super League. Pick any edition of the PSL and you will find out that Zalmi have played some amazing cricket to impress their fans. So, who will they be retaining in the upcoming season expectedly?
Their first retention will probably be the left-arm quick Wahab Riaz. The pacer had finished third on the most wicket takers list in last PSL edition. He picked up 17 wickets in just 13 matches and will be likely to move up the ladder in the next edition.
Besides, obviously, Zalmi would want to retain their captain Darren Sammy who has lead them to the final stages of the tournament for last three seasons consecutively. He really deserves to be the best captain in PSL and will continue to impress.
Zalmi would also like to stick to Hasan Ali who has been one of their lead pacers since the inaugural season of the tournament. Even though Hasan is having a purple patch of late, he’s expected to make up for it by the time PSL 5 would start.
If there is one batsman that Zalmi would want to retain in the PSL 2020 draft, it would be Kamran Akmal. The wicket-keeper batsman scored 425 runs in PSL 3 and was the second highest-run getter after Luke Ronchi. In PSL 2019, he scored 357 to seal the second spot once again. So, he’s likely going to be part of the retained squad for Zamli in PSL 5 auction.
Imam-ul-Haq provided them with some solid starts in the last season and is likely going to be the part of their squad in the upcoming PSL season as well. He seizes the last spot on our list among players who will likely be retained by Peshawar Zalmi.
Quetta Gladiators Retained Players List PSL 5 2020
Quetta are the defending champions at the moment and would be likely to appear in yet another final of the Pakistan Super League as they go into the next edition of the tournament. So, who will they be retaining for the next season?
First up, it will be Sarfaraz Ahmed – the captain – who has recently been given extension as the captain of Pakistan team in limited overs cricket. He has been a utility cricketer in his career so far but his game plan, game awareness, and captaincy skills are superb. He has done it for Gladiators consistently and they’d never risk losing him in the captain’s slot.
The highest run getter of the last season, Shane Watson will be their next pick in the retained players. Watson scored 430 runs in the last year’s PSL in just 12 games with a highest of 91*. He has been a heavy scorer for Gladiators in the past seasons as well and would likely stay with them despite the fact that the entire tournament will be played in Pakistan this time around. In fact, he toured Pakistan with Gladiators last year as well.
Next on the list is the right-arm pace sensation Mohammad Hasnain. The pacer did impress the selectors in his first appearance in PSL last year and it will earn him a retention in the upcoming PSL for sure. He shined with 12 wickets in 7 games in PSL 4.
Sohail Tanvir has been their ace seamer since the start of the Pakistan Super League and they’d definitely love to retain him as they move into the PSL 5 2020. In fact, he was retained last year as well and would be a likely pick this time around as well.
Last, but not the least, it will be Sunil Narine to wear the Gladiators’ kit once again and will be the likely pick among the retained players. Knowing his class and stature, he definitely deserves a slot before getting into the PSL 5 2020 draft. His mystery spinners will definitely do the trick for quetta if he gets a chance.
Islamabad United Retained Players List PSL 2020
The two times champions, Islamabad would definitely like to bag another one as they get into the PSL 5. And, if you look at the pattern of their title wins, this season is certainly the one they’d want to take home. The won the first and the third season of PSL, and this time it’s the fifth. So, who knows if they can go on with that and make a mark!
Coming to the Islamabad United PSL 5 retained players, Luke Ronchi is definitely going to be their favorite pick ahead of the next PSL season. He had been the difference for them in the top order and he will expectedly be their first retained player for the upcoming season of PSL.
The PSL product Shadab Khan has made his mark at the international scene over the years and he will be another retention for Islamabad United as they get into the next season of Pakistan Super League. Shadab’s record has been impressive in T20I cricket and he is part of various T20 leagues as well. Islamabad had retained him last time around and he is likely going to be retained once more.
Asif Ali has been their star in the middle order and his hard hitting capabilities is what Islamabad would like to take advantage of once again. The right hander provides that little thump lower down the order at the end of the innings and is certainly worth retaining. His likely retention for the upcoming PSL 5 is definitely going to extend Islamabad’s batting deep and will give them a chance to score big every time they take the field.
Another middle order batsman Hussain Talat has been the finest of players who emerged out of Islamabad United franchise in these four seasons of PSL. He was among the retained players last year as well and is likely going to go into the PSL 5 draft as a retained player too. He is known for maintaining some balance in the middle order and really is a key player for ISLU.
Cameron Delport scored 355 runs in 12 games for United in the Pakistan Super League 2019 and will likely make it to the retained players this time around. He finished third on the list of highest run getters in the previous season and is expected to show some class in the upcoming season 5 of the tournament as well. However, his retention, like many other foreign players, is subject to his willingness to be available for all matches of the tournament that will be played in Pakistan this time.
So, these are the top 5 likely players each team will be retaining ahead of the PSL 2020 draft. In fact, there will be more of them and we have only shared the top 5 names for each team here. What do you think about these players? Do you agree with us on this retained players list?
Foreign Players Who’ll Be Part of PSL 5 Draft
Whenever a season of Pakistan Super League is coming up, there is a lot of buzz around which foreign players will be taking part in the upcoming season. And as we run towards the PSL 5 draft, there is a lot of confusion looming around which foreign players will be featured in the tournament. The biggest area of concern is that the tournament is scheduled completely in Pakistan and we have seen in the past that many foreign players have had issues over visiting the country even for a few matches.
So, the franchises will be focusing on players who agree to play the entire season in Pakistan without any issues whatsoever. Another major concern is on the player salaries. Previously, the players were heavily incentivized to play only a few matches of the tournament in Pakistan. However, last year, when the latter part of the tournament was played at home, the franchises only picked players ready to play in Pakistan without any extra payments. So, that came out as a policy across the line and we’ll see the same pattern this year too. No extra payments will be made to the foreigners this time around either.
Still, we expect a lot of big names coming this time as well. And, here we have listed the most likely ones who will be participating in the Pakistan Super League 2020.
- AB de Villiers
- Steve Smith
- Ben Cutting
- Daniel Christian
- Corey Anderson
- Anton Devcich
- Darren Sammy
- Dwayne Smith
- Mark Wood
- Luke Wright
- Shane Watson
- Lendl Simmons

- James Vince
- Colin Ingram
- Cameron Delport
- JP Duminy
- Rilee Rossouw
- Colin Munro
- Luke Ronchi
- Liam Dawson
- Sunil Narine
- David Malan
- David Weise
These are only the most certain names that will be participating in the PSL 2020 draft and subsequently in the tournament from their respective franchises. Obviously, the entire list of players to participate in the PSL auction will be much bigger and we’ll update it here as soon as the date of the draft draws near and the final list of foreign players available for franchises to pick is released by the officials.
