Pakistan Super League 2020 is the next edition of country’s premier cricket tournament that is scheduled in February/March next year. PSL 5 will be the fifth time all the 6 franchises will be up against each other to claim the title that’s currently with Quetta Gladiators. The PCB has already announced the PSL 2020 venues and the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium is among them as well. As the board had decided to hold the entire PSL this year in Pakistan, some renovations had been done at the stadiums to make them worthy of hosting an event of this stature where most of the international players will be hosted as well.

Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium PSL 2020

The Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium is one of the major cricket venues in the country that has hosted a lot of international cricket games since it was first inaugurated in 1992. The stadium is located in the Rawalpindi city of Pakistan.

The stadium has recently received a makeover for allowing greater number of spectators to be able to watch the matches live. After this recent renovation project, the stadium can now host almost 25000 spectators at a time.

If you look a little into the history of this venue, it hosted international matches even before the international stadium was constructed. At that time it was the Rawalpindi Club Cricket ground which had the honor of hosting a Test match against the Kiwis in March 1965.

Few decades later, the Rawalpindi International Cricket Stadium became a major venue during 1996 Cricket World Cup. At that time, it was also declared as a test venue where Zimbabwe cricket team played a test match. With that, the cricket ground became the 14th Test venue in the country. Late in 2001, the PCB decided to uplift this cricket venue with the installation of floodlights ahead of the Australian tour.

The venue lies on the edge of a city of around 4 million people just 3 miles away from Pakistan’s capital city Islamabad. The stadium hosted the last ODI back in December, 2006 and hasn’t yet been a venue for any international T20 game. So, as we move ahead to the PSL 2020, it will be hosting international cricketers for the first time in its history in a T20 game.

PCB announced the renovation of the stadium last year in April as part of the renovation drive for stadiums across the country. It will now host the matches of Pakistan Super League 2020 and any future international fixtures as well.

Has Rawalpindi Hosted PSL Games Before?

Not yet! It’s the first time that PCB has decided to make Rawalpindi a venue for the PSL games. In the gradual steps to bring the tournament completely back home, the PSL matches have only been hosted at Lahore and Karachi before this and no other venue in the country has had the privilege. So, Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium will be hosting PSL the first time in PSL 5.

So, stay tuned and be ready in February 2020 to catch the action live from PSL 5 matches Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. You will have some quality entertainment for sure.
